Day 1

So Day one went pretty well. Some things you should know about me:

I have already converted my life from white to brown. meaning I do not buy white bread, white rice or white pasta, or white flour
red meat is a rarity around here
I am lactose intolerant
I am currently nursing a 6 month old
I am compulsive snacker especially at night.
my husband is ridiculously skinny and can eat anything.

I think what we are going to see in this blog is that just by writing down my food intake, journaling if you will, I will become more conscientious about what I put in my mouth. I don't want you all making fun of me because I compulsively ate 3 fruit snacks in less than an hour just because I wanted something sweet.

So here is how my first day went

1 piece of 100% whole wheat - all natural no HFCS 100 cal - 77 on index (high)
- a schmear of salted sweet cream butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar
20 oz water

Lunch
Hummus 6 on index LOW - 540 calories
2 servings of baby carrots 70 calories 63 on index - HIGH
2 servings of blue corn chips (63 high) 280 calories (I am estimating. I dont have a balance but it would be nice if they said how many chips that is on the bag)
total intake for lunch: 890
20 oz water

Dinner:
1 pork chop seasoned with lowrys and broiled (no GI value listed for meats)
several servings of broccoli doused in a little butter (10 GI value!!)
1 c (I measured) of lactose free milk (90 calories 38 GI)

after dinner
a few chips
a fruit snack
50 calories worth of salsa

final water in take was 2 quarts or 64 ounces.

So overall a good day.

till next time,

Jen

The glycemic Index 30 day journey

So, a couple of weeks ago I went to my midwife for a check up and I was telling her that every pound I lost after my Little one was born has quickly been put back on and then some. She has recommended that I try to use the glycemic index as a basis for fulfilling my dietary needs. So, I have been reading up on the pros and the cons Web MD seems to have the best info. A one stop shop if you will. If I understand this right, the purpose of using the glycemic index is to eat low index foods (HEALTHY FOODS - Snickers bar is a low GI but I wouldn't recommend it as my daily snack.
  • Low (good) glycemic index levels: 55 or less
  • Medium glycemic index levels: 56–69
  • High (bad) glycemic index levels: 70 or higher
So I found a great web site that lists common food and their glycemic index number. The biggest issue that I have with this process is that there is no serving sizes listed. At the same time that I am trying to loose weight, I am Exclusively Breast feeding my 6 months old so I need at least 2000 calories to sustain life for both of us other wise, I will be hungry all the time and that never leads to good food choices.

So, over the course of the next thirty days, you will be able to follow my food choices (I'll list them in the blog) and I'll tell you the ups and downs and once a week, I'll log my weight. As of last night, on my parents digital scale I weighted 232. I am 5'6" tall and I am at least 75 pounds over weight. I am 30 years old with 4 kids and a husband. I stay at home and i do laundry all day :-)

Follow me on this journey... It should be interesting.

till next time,

-Jen
